John ensured that the McGovern family who passed through Brooklyn stayed connected for over 50 years. As the son of immigrants myself, and the first American in our little branch of the tree, John was always an inspiration to me. I'm only half- Irish, but when John was around, I was 100% McGovern. I hope my son carries the name as well as Dr. John did.

Condolences to his lovely daughters and their families. God bless you in your time of sorrow.

The last of the direct line of the McGovern brothers to come to America.I have fond memories of my uncle Phil's family visiting us in Long Beach while my grandfather Andy McGovern was staying with us for the summer. John's life and accomplishments have made the entire McGovern clan proud. Rest in peace John.

My sincerest sympathies to Deirdre, Coleen & Barbara (as well as extended family) on the loss of your Dad, John.

In the Summer of 1995, John welcomed a fairly naïve, young Irish relative into his home and into his family—I will never forget his influence, persona, and wise words.
Simply put, John made you want to be a better person and his presence made that happen.

    John you will be missed.

Missy and I are saddened to hear of the death of Dr. John McGovern. Unfortunately, we are not able to express our condolences in person, nor attend John's funeral mass. We are both in quarantine as a result of testing positive for COVID less than a week ago.
John's name evokes many memories - as a friend, a fellow administrator at NCC, and most espeically, as a family man.
I first met John on my first day at NCC. He introduced himself to me as a fellow Fordham Ram and a friendship began with he and his family.
Family was his first priority. He extolled the many accomplishements of "his" girls, and, of course, his love for all things Irish, especially Ann. His founding and involvement in the Friendly Sons was legendary. He brought me into that fold.
While his friendship was special, it was the roles that he played at NCC that made him standout in my eyes. He was a financial administrator par excellence but what really made the difference at NCC was his moral compass that helped direct the College in all the correct ways. I owe a debt of gratitude for all the he did in his forty years at NCC. It was a better college because of him, his actions, and his decisions.
John earned his Ed.D. in the Educational Policy and Leadership program, a program I now direct at Hofstra. I teach courses in this program and just this semester as I listened to students sharing their research interests I pointed to the dissertations that lined the room and my eye fell on one in particular - John's dissertation on the history of SUNY. He was justifiably proud of this body of research. I pointed out his dissertation to the students as an exemplar for them to follow.
Missy and I offer our prayers and condolences to Barbara, Colleen, and Deidre and to their famlies.
We are sorry that we cannot be with you but will be with you in spirit. I need not tell those who knew him, that John was a special person who made the lives he touched happier.
