I was a neighbor and babysitter for the McElroy family for years. They were a lovely family -so much more than just neighbors. Cathy was very good to my mother when my dad had a brain aneurysm. I know that the McElroy clan will miss him dearly.

Gene was good friend whom I admired greatly. It was always a pleasure sharing stories while we hung out at bars , restaurants or at the yearly Miami Division qualification range. A true gentleman proud of his family and work. He will be missed. RIP brother

Gene was a consummate advocate and gentleman; smart, kindly and gentle. He was a good friend to our family and to my late wife Eileen Callahan. We've just lost one of the great ones.

Gene was one of the kindest and most gracious men that I have ever met. Whether he was a talking to a first year ADA or a veteran bureau chief, he treated everyone with kindness and respect, which is a remarkable and forgotten trait in this profession. I am glad to have known him and will cherish his memory as an example of how it is supposed to be done.

I worked with Gene in NYC-BNDD. Gene was imbued with the virtues of integrity and industry, skill and enterprise, courage and perseverance. On the street Gene had amazing self-control coming across as composed and nerveless; a man of action, daring and ingenuity.

Gene was a long time family friend who we loved. My Dad was very close and treasured their time together. I remember trips with family to Greenport during the summer. A generous, smart and gracious gentleman.

Gene was a guy to look up to in Woodside. He was handsome, tough, smart, athletic and a nice guy . He helped me get into his alma mater Hofstra University where he was a Quarterback . He once borrowed my Vietnam fatigue shirt to go undercover as a DEA Agent.
The Prince of Woodside who married a Princess and raised a beautiful family. God rest his soul. He was admired by many and will be missed .
