I just found this sad news 4 months after. Cheryl Steinburg was Miss Dellacroce to me. She was my Art and Photography teacher at Valley Stream South High School in the late 70s. I wanted to show her that I had become a full-time photographer. She stood out to me after 4 decades. She was a star among people. I wish I'd found her earlier.

Bayside High School definitely had a major impact on who I am today. The interactions with friends and teachers were always great. Being in the art program I’ve interacted with several art teachers at Bayside High School and cherish all of them as mentors. I first met Mrs. Steinberg my junior year and I could instantly see her awesome personality and love for the arts. She was able to see my talent and pushed me to better myself. I’ve had the privilege of taking classes with her for two years. My favorite class taught by her was photography. It was a media of art that I’ve never attempted, and to be honest I wasn’t all that great when I started. I definitely progressed through the year and always keep in mind techniques she’s taught me when approaching photography.
One instance of how dedicated she was to her students was when I had trouble affording credits for a joint art program with St. John’s University. She was able to help me figure out how to submit the application for the college credits in an affordable way. She clearly had the best interests in mind for her students to progress. I’ve always felt that she cared for her students like a mother.
I’ve worked along side her and the other art department staff, at the time, setting up for annual Bayside High School art shows. She use to be so proud and exited showcasing her students’ art work. It use to make me feel so great if she bragged about any of my work to her colleagues also.
Hearing about the loss of Mrs. Steinberg made me go back and read the heartfelt message she left for me in my yearbook. I graduated in 2011 and I regret I couldn’t make the time to visit Bayside High School and reach out to her since then. I truly cherish my time with her as a teacher and a mentor. Condolences to the family. May she rest in peace.

Cheryl, your spirit will remain with all those you touched. Your imprint on the students will not fade away as your heart and soul was behind all you did. You challenged when it was needed and guided those who looked for your leadership. There is a special place in heaven for you...

No amount of words can describe the loss of one of the greatest, most empowering, inspirational human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Cheryl consistently pushed myself and my peers to our limits because of the potential she saw in us, and in every single one of her students. She brought out the best in all of us, in a way only she could.

She had a profound effect on me during my high school years, and later on into my adult life (so much so that I opted to take her class for 2 years in a row, and later on major in Photography in college). She opened my eyes to such beauty through the lens, both metaphorically and literally, as her method of teaching transcended the classroom, and inspired me to look at all things in a different light, because everything changes depending on your perspective in which you view it.

The fond memories I have of her I often share, and I will always and forever hold those memories close.

She was truly a once-in-a-lifetime human being, and my heart goes out to her friends and family, and to anyone whose lives she touched.

Thank you Cheryl, for who you were, and everything you did. You will be missed greatly.

Cheryl was kind, thoughtful and a force of nature. She was a perfectionist with her work. I enjoyed watching when she would coach students to get them ready them for interviews. Cheryl, thank you for helping to prepare our students.

"Force of nature" does not adequately describe Cheryl. Her unique combination of personality, professionalism, quick wittedness, candor, and passion inspired everyone lucky enough to come into her world. Her record of 4,500 words in 2 minutes will forever stand as a record in the "conversations" I ever had with anyone as her principal. Problem was-she was right! An entire community-past, present & future- owes her so much. She indeed touched the future...and so much for the better. Thanks for everything, CS. We miss you.

Mrs. Steinberg was my photography teacher back in 2006-2007. I remember her like it was yesterday. She was passionate and enjoyed what she was doing. All of my photography skills I have today are because of her. I am heartbroken to hear of her passing. I will never forget her and wish her eternal peace.

    Hi Everyone,

First I would like to share my condolences to Mrs. Steinberg and her family.

Mrs. Steinberg was my first film photography teacher in high school. I remember coming into the class thinking that photography was just about holding a camera and taking pictures of random things. Mrs. Steinberg taught me that photography was not to be treated as a hobby, but an actual form of art. In the first half of the year, she didn’t even allow us to use a camera or create prints. Instead, we learned the history of photography, the various components of an SLR camera, and the chemical process of developing your own film and prints. It was definitely something I have never done before. We even had written exams 😂 something I wasn’t expecting in an art class.

In the beginning of the year I didn’t take this class seriously, I was a student who didn’t always apply himself…but Mrs. Steinberg taught me the importance of being disciplined in learning something new and seeing the results of hard work.

Because of her teachings, I actually pursued photography after her class, and had my work exhibited in a Student Showcase at QCC. Today, I still take photos as a hobby specializing in portraits and Street Photography and I still use the skills that Mrs. Steinberg taught me, even now.

I graduated to Bayside HS in 2007, time really flies and this moment reminds me that life is short, and it might be a good idea to check in on the people who helped mold who you are today, no matter how busy life gets ❤️

    With love,

    Uma

Ms. Stienberg is the reason why I love photography and she crosses my mind everytime I take photos. Fun fact! She also taught me about the phrase tar-shay (targets fancy name as she said) because she would refer to me as bri-shayyy. She will always be a part of me and I’m thankful to have had her as a teacher at BHS.

Cheryl and I worked together for 7 years at Bayside High School. She lit up any room she walked into; that is how I saw her.

Of all the duties Cheryl and I shared together, one of my favorite memories is sharing our photography darkroom program together; classes that she had flawlessly ran herself. She was very particular in how she did things (which could drive me nuts at times!), but she also taught me everything I needed to know in order to run those classes efficiently and effectively. If you knew Cheryl, you knew she always did the right thing by her students and she didn’t cut corners with anything.

I admired Cheryl mostly though, for her uniqueness. She was simply FUN to be around. Even when she was hyper focused on accomplishing (perfecting!) a task, she was still, well, CHERYL - a total character. There was nothing generic about Cheryl; everything from her voice to her walk - as our colleague Dianna put it, her “commanding stride” - was one of a kind. It wasn’t uncommon for Cheryl to make a sarcastic quip under her breath at inopportune times and have us stifling our amusement. I often found myself entertained by Cheryl’s mannerisms and mindset, while at the same time looking up to her. I would even imitate some of her phrases with my own students.

Cheryl was direct even when it went against the grain, but her intentions were always good. She was also quick to laugh. I can still hear her laugh, throwing her head back and slapping the desk with her perfectly manicured hand. She had a sharp wit and she wasn’t afraid to use it! We laughed often - that was one of the best things about her, her ability to joke around and have fun while handling things like a pro. Her hair and attire were always perfect….she was like the “cool Aunt”. She was confident, funny, self-sufficient, accomplished, particular, transparent, witty and positive - despite all she had lived through. Cheryl’s love for life and free spirit was undeniable.

The times we (& our friend and colleague Heather) went out for drinks and dinner, or to pop in to her meticulous apartment, are some of my most special memories of her, because we were able to connect with her on an even more personal level. At 26 years my senior, Cheryl was still inherently spunky and young at heart, and magnetic to be around.

Working at BHS was a very special part of my life, but it would not have been nearly the same without Cheryl’s impact, presence, and our memories together. People like Cheryl are rare. I will never forget her.

It feels like yesterday when I last saw her, but it has been much more than that. Even with the passing of time, I can remember her laugh, her zest for life, her commanding walk down the halls and her down to earth straight forward talk. She is someone I admired and am honored to have worked with for nearly 7 years at Bayside HS. I can still hear her lively voice in my mind, and she truly knew how to live life to the fullest. Thank you, Cheryl, for all that you did, and you will be greatly missed. May she live on in eternal memory.

Cheryl was a successful, well rounded woman who never took NO for an answer! She touched many lives through her work in education and corporate life. She was a fierce competitor on the golf course and tennis court! She certainly fought the good fight over the past 5 months. May she rest in peace and her family be comforted that she is no longer suffering. She will be missed!

Cheryl singled me out my first year in Bayside H.S. She pleasantly confronted me and asked me to join the cause and enlisted me to take part in a Work Based Learning program. I took a shine to her right away and her kindness, advice, guidance, and take-no-crap attitude made me smile and will make me smile for years to come. I will miss her and feel that her touch will stay with me forever. I only wish I had more time with her. My love and condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. May she rest in peace.

What a loss to Cheryl’s immediate & Bayside families.

That being said to me it is not the number of years we live but how we live them! The little I interacted with Cheryl my gut told me “she was no nonsense old school” getting the job done; along with a sense of compassion! To me that was so refreshing.

    Please extend my condolences.

    Peace,

Cheryl was an amazing mentor and friend. She was a driving force in Bayside High School's CTE Programs. She worked hard to establish long-standing industry partnerships and create meaningful internship opportunities for Bayside High School's students. She was dynamic and vivacious - always working to put our students first and prepare them for the work force. She was a true inspiration and I miss her terribly. Rest in Peace, My Dear CS!!
