Obituary

Her family and her faith were her most important priorities. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, everyone who met Ann would comment on her gentle, loving, and peaceful demeanor.

Ann Bennett Sauchelli (89) of New Hyde Park (and previously Rego Park, and Woodside, NY) was born on April 4, 1933, in New York City to the late Anna Estelle McGee and Anthony William Bennett. She passed away on July 31, 2022, predeceased by Vincent Sauchelli, her beloved husband of 62 years. Ann is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; Ellen Sauchelli and Vincent Siegfried of Williston Park, Patty Sauchelli Henne and Donald Henne of Hempstead, and Jean Sauchelli Moran and James Moran of Garden City. Her grandchildren, Kathleen Henne Scotti (Nick Scotti), Michael Henne (Jessica Paulson Henne), Dylan Siegfried (Kristin Fitzpatrick), Daniel Henne, Megan Henne (Jun Xi Chen), Jillian Moran, Jake Siegfried (Melanie Molina), Matthew Moran, and William Henne brought tremendous pride and joy to their grandmother’s life. She cared for each and every one of them as they grew up and they looked forward to Grandma days. She was a constant and loving force in their lives. This year, Ann was blessed to meet her three great-grandsons; twins Calvin Kent and Kai Ciaran Henne, and just last month, Nathan Bennett Scotti.

Ann is also survived by her lifelong best friend, Patricia (Harrison) Frederick, and many other family members including nieces, nephews, and cousins on both the McGee-Bennett and Giardina-Sauchelli sides of the family. Though Ann was an only child, her cousins were like siblings to her including the Bennett, Collins, Pailes, McGee, and McKenna families.

She was raised in Woodside, NY right after the great depression. As a young girl, she enjoyed playing the piano, spending time with her cousins, and exploring the city that was her home. As she got older, she loved traveling with her best friend, Pat, and often told stories of their adventures in the Berkshires and Bermuda. She was educated in and dedicated to the Catholic Church and school system, having graduated from St. Sebastian’s in Woodside and Dominican Commercial High School in Brooklyn. After high school, Ann trained to become an administrative assistant and worked in the executive offices of the Bulova Watch Company.

She met and married the love of her life, Vincent Sauchelli in September of 1957. They set up home in Rego Park and spent their early married years there, raising their daughters, until their move to their forever home in New Hyde Park.

She was an active member of Holy Spirit Parish for over 50 years, where she volunteered and taught religious education.  While Ann cherished quiet time with her family, her door was always open to friends and neighbors.  When her own children were grown, she went back to work at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.

Ann was a dedicated mother and caregiver. She retired from Adelphi to be a full-time GMA. She was often found in the schoolyards of Cross Street, Stewart School and St. Thomas the Apostle School, picking up the kids and taking them to after-school activities and fun adventures. She was famous for her stuffed mushrooms and chicken cutlets, movie days, trips to Wendy’s, and the best “nice tickles”. Grandma never missed an event and thoroughly enjoyed being in the audience of hundreds of theater, music, dance, and athletic events.
