In Memory Of
Robert E. Van Meter passed away January 13, 2020 with his loving family by his side. He was 89 years old.
Bob was born on November 10, 1930 in Manhattan, New York, son of the late Karl and Bessie Van Meter. He graduated from Exeter Academy in 1948. Then he completed his bachelor of science degree at Princeton University, graduating in 1952. Bob then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War where he was honorably discharged in 1954 as a lieutenant earning the National Defense Service medal. Bob started working for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in 1954 until his retirement in 1985 earning the Liberty Mutual sales Hall of Fame in 1969. Bob was a long-standing member of the Garden City Community Church, Garden City, NY. Bob’s passions were flying model airplanes. He was a member of the Sky Hawks in Eastern Long Island and also the Nassau Flyers Club. Other hobbies included many enjoyable hours working in his garden as well as volunteering at the Botanical Gardens. He enjoyed playing bridge at the Garden City senior center which was a favorite past time as well as being an avid bingo caller with his family – ”B 4 not after!” Bob is predeceased by his late wife Barbara in 2000 of 49 years. He is survived by his three children Linda Starkey and her husband Earle, Robert R Van Meter and his wife Cindy and Kenneth K Van Meter and his fiancé Kris Landy. He has eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Relatives, friends and family are invited to visit at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home Inc., 1201 Franklin Avenue, Garden City, New York on Friday, January 17th from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm. A short service will be held at 3:30pm and at 7:00pm. Burial will be at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington at 11 o’clock on Saturday, January 18.
