Obituary for Maureen Ann Delany
October 7, 1941 – July 25, 2019
Maureen Ann Delany passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019 after a brave battle with cancer. Born on October 7, 1941 in Brooklyn, Maureen moved with her parents James J. and Margaret Burnes to Garden City in 1952. She attended St. Joseph’s School, Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Rosemont College in 1963 with a degree in early education. Married in 1966 to John (Jay) M. Delany, they moved to Virginia where she taught elementary school before moving back to Garden City in 1971 to raise her family. While her children were young, Maureen was a very active volunteer in her children’s schools, as well as a Girl Scout and a Cub Scout leader.
In 1983 Maureen returned to teaching and spent the last 21 years of her career as a first grade teacher at St. Anne’s School in Garden City. She was a natural teacher, recognizing each child’s abilities and encouraging them to reach their goals. Maureen’s teaching gifts influenced hundreds of children over her career. In her retirement, Maureen spent hours volunteering at various local organizations including the Community Club of Garden City and the childcare center at the Department of Social Services, where her kindness and experience with children were much needed.
She was an intrepid traveler and instilled this love of travel in all of her children. Accompanied by her husband, Jay, she explored many European countries and American states over the years, returning to her favorites, Ireland and France multiple times. She was fascinated by other cultures and her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere led to many happy experiences and good restaurant recommendations. Maureen’s favorite trips were ones shared with her family and long-time friends. She also loved spending time closer to home at the beach and in Montauk.
Maureen’s happiest times were spent with her family and friends, some whose friendship spanned over six decades. She especially enjoyed her time with her eight grandchildren, whom she adored. She spent as much time with her grandchildren as possible, attending countless games, performances, birthdays, celebrations and ordinary afternoons over the years. She knew how to make each one feel special and loved, and her active presence in their lives was a joy and a blessing.
Maureen leaves behind her beloved husband of almost 53 years, John M. Delany, her three children, Patricia L. Hegeman, Brian J. Delany and Eileen M. Comerford, their spouses, Richard Hegeman, Carrie Delany and Michael Comerford, her eight grandchildren, Thomas, Catherine and Elizabeth Hegeman, Lukas and Quinn Delany, and Delany, Ronan and Keegan Comerford, and her many longtime friends. She was predeceased by her parents, James J. and Margaret Saum Burnes, and her brother, James J. Burnes, Jr.
