In Memory Of
Elaine Gloria Vaiana, née Diana, sadly passed away on January 21st, 2023 after a year-long battle with cancer at the age of 81. Elaine was born on August 27, 1941 and grew up on the Lower East Side as the youngest of 12 siblings. With the exception of a brief stint in California, she remained a proud lifelong New Yorker, eventually settling in Whitestone, Queens for the second half of her life.
As the youngest sibling in the Diana family, Elaine often served as the bridge between different generations. Her oldest sister was twenty years her senior, and some of Elaine’s nieces and nephews were only a few years her junior. Even as her siblings spread out across the country, with some moving out west and down south, she remained close to them and their families.
When Elaine started a family of her own, she kept it much smaller than the one she grew up in. She and her then-husband Carmine Vaiana (who passed away in 2017) only had one son, David. She cared for him deeply. In an age where few women had careers, Elaine entered the workforce to provide her family with stability and security. She worked at Aetna Life Insurance as a processor for ten years and was the payroll and office administrator at Clearview Gardens Corporation for over 25 years. Ever independent, she later returned part-time to that job even after retiring, only resigning in 2020.
Elaine had a passion for stories, whether from books or films. She also had a gift for storytelling when it came to her own life and her family’s history. Elaine used this gift to instill a reverence for the past in all the people she shared it with throughout her life. She treasured her relationships with others, and lived her life with compassion, strength, emotional intelligence, and a deep sense of empathy.
Elaine will be lovingly remembered by her son David, his wife Jessica, her three grandchildren (Victor, Erica, and Vincent) and her great-granddaughter Penelope, who was given the middle name “Elena” in Elaine’s honor.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 24th at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, located at 1201 Franklin Ave, Garden City, NY. Visitation time will be at 10 AM with an Episcopalian service to follow at 10:30 AM
