Margherita Ethel Castellano Dougherty, 101, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026. Born on September 11, 1924, in Hempstead, New York, to Louis J. Castellano and Ethel Eulalie Cuff, Margherita lived a life rooted in faith, family, kindness, and service to others.
She graduated from Hempstead High School in 1942 and went on to attend Marymount College, where she earned her degree in 1946. It was there that her lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Catholic faith deepened. Margherita devoted her life to her family, raising eight children in a home filled with love, generosity, and hospitality. She was known for her quiet acts of kindness, unwavering faith, and compassionate spirit. Whether caring for those in need, sharing her faith through prayer and the gift of rosaries, or simply offering encouragement and comfort, she touched countless lives with her warmth, humility, and generosity.
Margherita was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Dougherty, and her son, Paul Dougherty. She is survived by her children, Eloise Dougherty, Marita Dougherty, Robert L. Dougherty, Michael Dougherty, William Dougherty (Darshine Gajadhar), Patricia Oppenheimer (Daniel Oppenheimer), and Steven Dougherty (Brian Urkowitz); her grandchildren, Thomas Dougherty, Joseph Dougherty, Carolyn Dougherty, and Benjamin Oppenheimer; and her great-grandchildren, Brigid and Finbar Dougherty. Margherita will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her legacy of steadfast faith, boundless love for her family, and quiet service to others will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her.
