Obituary

With great sadness, we announce that our darling Nicholas Joseph Gargiulo III, 56, passed away and went to be with the Lord on March 14, 2026. He survived by his wife of 10 years, Marina Gargiulo, his daughter Olivia, his sons Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, Matthew, his sister Maria Kay Shamul and brother-in-law John Shamul, his sister Christa Gargiulo and Scott Silverman, his father Nicholas Gargiulo Jr., his nephews Paul, James, and his niece Claire. He was predeceased by his mother, Arleen Gargiulo.

Nicholas was born in West Islip, NY. He attended Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, NY, and played the trumpet in the school band, achieving highest honors and national music awards. He played professional tennis and provided lessons to young students. Nicholas graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.

Nicholas' beloved grandmother Marie’s condition inspired him to become a vascular surgeon. He attended the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he obtained his medical degree. He completed his residency
and fellowship in vascular surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. An additional achievement was obtaining an MBA degree in Hospital Administration. He dedicated his time and work to research for the treatment of atherosclerosis. Nicholas participated in multiple clinical trials and was an author for numerous academic publications. He spent the last 10 years working at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, where he treated the local community with compassion, used his unique surgical skills during critical trauma cases, and assisted residents with their research and data presentations at national professional conferences. He was a passionate mentor to medical students, a fierce advocate for nurses, residents who required additional training, and for ancillary hospital staff who did not
receive daily acknowledgment. Nicholas practiced Catholicism, attended church masses regularly, and was passionate about his faith, God, and Jesus. He was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and a proud
4th degree Knight of Columbus.

Nicholas enjoyed spending his free time with his family, exploring new places, playing tennis, travelling to the ocean, entertaining his children with trumpet playing and science experiments, and enjoying homemade meals. He was a devoted father, a loving husband, and a caring son who will be tremendously missed. His charming smile, contagious laugh, and warm hugs were the highlights of the day. Nicholas was a unique person who lit up the room with his presence and charm. He easily started conversations with strangers and was known for his friendly demeanor. Nicholas reached out to many people and was always helpful when someone needed assistance. Besides the previously described musical and sporting talents, he made delicious breakfasts on weekends and was a superb Sous Chef to his wife. He had a great memory for numerous facts, stories, bible passages, and names of people he met once. Nicholas will be lovingly remembered by many people whose lives he touched every day, and his colleagues who will reminisce about him for his empathy, professionalism, dedication, and ethical integrity. Nicholas was very friendly, generous, and kind. Dearest Nicholas, we will love you always and forever.
