Obituary

Brian R. Abamont, 82, passed peacefully into God's eternal embrace on December 30, 2025 at his home in Garden City, NY with family by his side.

An unrelentingly loving husband for 58 years to his wife Joyce, and devoted father to his four children, Tracy, Brian, Michael, and James, Brian held his family as his constant first priority. He undertook many roles in support of them over the years. When Joyce entered law school, he took on the gamut of domestic duties while continuing to work two jobs. When his children’s respective Girl and Boy Scout Troops needed new leadership, Brian stepped in to fill the need, including 12 years as Scoutmaster of St. Joseph's Boy Scout Troop 243. Brian attended many early morning swim meets and practices, hockey, soccer, little league baseball and basketball games, built numerous pinewood derby cars, repaired countless bicycles, helped deliver thousands of newspapers for his boys’ paper routes, and willingly chauffeured his kids any time, day or night, no questions asked. Brian never hesitated to show his family how much he loved them.

Raised in Jackson Heights, NY, and a product of Jesuit education from his time at Xavier High School in Manhattan through the completion of his studies at Fordham University, Brian earned both undergraduate and masters degrees. Fordham continued to have special meaning for him for the remainder of his life. In addition to receiving his degrees there, Brian and Joyce got engaged in front of the School of Education then located at 302 Broadway in Manhattan. Carrying on the Fordham link to their lives, Brian and Joyce celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party on the Fordham campus.

Brian's career focused mostly in education as a history teacher and administrator for New York City public high schools. He loved watching the Yankees and collecting coins and Lionel trains. An avid hunter and woodworker, he passed on his love of the outdoors and working with his hands to his sons. Brian especially enjoyed his family’s annual vacation to the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Brian held strongly to his Catholic faith and served the Church in various capacities throughout his life. Beginning as an altar server in grammar school, he carried on his service at St. Joseph’s Church in Garden City where he was a parishioner for 54 years. He participated in numerous ministries during that time, including as a Eucharistic Minister. In 2012, along with Joyce, Brian received the St. Agnes Medal from Bishop William Murphy for distinguished volunteer service to the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Religion and faith in God were a significant part of his family life. Brian made educating his children in the Catholic faith a central tenet of their upbringing, making many sacrifices to provide that opportunity to them.

Brian is survived by his wife, Joyce, daughter Tracy, and sons, Brian (Kharla), Michael, and James (Jessi).  He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Brian, Christopher, Matthew, Connor, and Mackenzie as well as multiple cousins in the O'Connor family. His father Louis "Jimmy" Abamont, mother Rita Abamont (nee O'Connor), and sister Carol Abamont preceded him in death.

Respects can be paid at Fairchild Funeral Home in Garden City, NY from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, January 6, 2025. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church in Garden City, NY at 11 am on Wednesday January 7th followed by interment at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury, NY.
