John Anthony O’Connell, commonly known as Jack, beloved husband, cherished father, proud grandfather and friend to all, passed away on March 3rd, 2025 at his home in Hempstead, New York. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and kindness to all.
Born October 9, 1943 in South Ozone Park, Queens, to John and Stella (nee Stankewick), Jack lived a life rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, integrity and a deep commitment to those he loved. He was a devoted husband to Margaret (nee Foehl).
He is survived by his beloved children – Megan (Anthony), John, Mary, Kevin (Jennifer), Alison (Scott), Henry (Sasha), James (Stephanie) and Liam (Rheana). His precious grandchildren – Aidan, Violet, Luca, Lulani, Stella, Finn, Wolfgang, Jack, Coco, Oona, Julian and Felix called him their “Pop Pop.”
Aside from his large family, Jack leaves a brother, Michael; sister-in-law Judy; brother-in-law, Vance Polich; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Maureen Polich; his first wife, Alison Conroy; and his daughter-in-law, Patricia.
Jack’s persona was a steady source of wisdom, strength and entertainment for all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. As he wore many hats (butcher’s apprentice, route salesman, bartender, actor), he seldom was at a loss for words of guidance. He was above all else a true character, blessed in many ways and passionate in his actions. He made all people feel lucky to call him a friend.
Jack was a veteran of the United States Army, a member of the “OLD GUARD,” proud member of both the Teamster Union and the Screen Actor’s Guild. Jack was also active for many years in community theatre groups on Long Island, Artists without Walls in NYC and the Writers Read compendium.
In Jack’s memory, do a kind deed for someone.
