It is with deep sorrow and immense gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of John Appelt, who entered into eternal rest on August 5, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on September 24, 1945, John was a proud lifelong resident of Garden City, New York. While he enjoyed traveling and seeing many parts of the world, there was never a place he loved more than Garden City. It was there that he built a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and service—a life that touched countless people.

John had an infectious personality. He loved to laugh, tell stories, and make people smile. He was never the quiet one in the room and had a way of making everyone feel welcome, regardless of their relationship to him. John loved having a good time, treasured every opportunity to gather with those he loved, and believed life was meant to be celebrated. He always smiled, and his persistent optimism lifted those around him, even in difficult moments.

Above all else, John was a devoted father and grandfather. His children were the greatest joy of his life, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He spent years traveling the country to watch them compete, never wanting to miss a game, match, or special moment. John was especially proud of his daughters and their lacrosse careers, celebrating every accomplishment with genuine excitement and unwavering support. He cherished the many rounds of golf he shared with his sons, creating memories that will forever be treasured. As his family grew, his greatest happiness came from being “Grandpa,” proudly showering his grandchildren with unconditional love and encouragement.

Golf was one of John’s lifelong passions. He enjoyed numerous rounds at Cherry Valley Club and Garden City Golf Club, where he formed lasting friendships and created memories extending beyond the game itself.

John’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher at St. Joseph’s Church. He was also an active member of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce and the Garden City Men’s Association, always looking for ways to support and strengthen the community he loved.

Those who knew John could always count on him; he would do anything for anyone without expecting anything in return. His generosity, kindness, and compassion defined his character. Whether a family member, friend, neighbor, or stranger needed help, John was there. He measured success not by what he accumulated, but by the relationships he built and the lives he touched.

John is survived by his former wife, Jeanne; his beloved daughter, Amy, and her husband, Jermaine, and their children, Addison, Merritt, and Maverick; his son, Jack, and his wife, Alison; his son, Will, and his wife, Lauren, and their children, Hunter and Paige; and his daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Ben. He also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends, fellow parishioners, golf partners, and so many others whom he felt blessed to know.
