Raymond John Kahres, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Merrick, NY, on October 24, 2025 with his wife by his side.
Born in Manhattan, NY, on January 12, 1943, Ray was the son of the late Raymond and Marietta Kahres. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda Kahres, and his beloved children, Lauren and Joe Romano, and Lisa and Richie Wortmann. Ray was the proud grandfather of Christopher, Katie, Raymond, and Rebecca, who brought great joy to his life. He is also survived by his sisters, Lynne Kenny and June Mills, and was a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Ray graduated from John Adams High School in 1961 and went on to enjoy a successful 40-year career in banking. Over the years, he advanced from teller to vice president, working in branches from Queens and Long Island to Hawaii and back. His dedication and integrity earned him the respect of colleagues and customers alike. Ray was also involved in his church community, serving as a Baptismal Sponser and later as a member of the Parish Council.
Ray’s greatest joy, however, was his family. Whether cheering at his daughters’ softball games, attending his grandchildren’s concerts, plays and soccer matches, or sharing laughter on family vacations, Ray’s support always made his family feel safe, loved and special. He and Linda were best friends who found happiness simply being together, whether they were reading on the couch, relaxing at the beach or travelling. As a father and grandfather, Ray was gentle, loving, and full of fun.
He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his rapier wit, and his ability to make everyone around him laugh. Ray now lives with God, but his love will forever remain in our hearts.
