Marguerite Patricia Doris Carney, affectionately known as Peggy, passed away on June 5, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on April 11, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Peggy lived a long life defined by love, family, and resilience. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, dearly loved aunt, and loyal friend whose presence brought comfort, warmth, and strength to those around her.
On August 27, 1949, she married Edward “Ed” Carney, the love of her life. Together they built a life centered on family and commitment, sharing decades of marriage grounded in devotion and partnership.
A deeply faithful lifelong Catholic, Peggy drew strength from her faith throughout her life. She lived her beliefs through her devotion to her family, her kindness to others, and her quiet generosity. Her spirituality remained a guiding presence throughout her life.
Peggy cherished her role at the heart of her family and will be remembered for her kindness, her strength, and her unwavering dedication to those she loved. She took great pride in serving as the matriarch of a large and growing family and found her greatest joy in time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She especially treasured fond memories of raising her children in Brooklyn, Bellerose Village, and Garden City. She also cherished summers and celebrations in Breezy Point, and later in Mattituck.
She is survived by her nine children and their spouses: Rita and Everett Flannery, Ed and Susan Carney, Jeannie and Craig Tigh, Patty and Paul Raymond, Marybeth and Kevin McCarthy, Joseph and Maria Carney, James and Karen Carney, Peggy and Neal Griffin, and Katy and Scott Cole; 28 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren, with several great-grandchildren on the way.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ed Carney; her beautiful grandson Eddie B. Carney; and her sisters Jean O’Shea and Carol O’Neill, with whom she shared a lifelong bond as part of the “Doris Sisters,” Peggy being the middle of three sisters born to the Doris family.
A wake will be held on Tuesday, June 9, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 10, at 9:45 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by interment at Holy Rood Cemetery.
Peggy’s legacy of love, faith, and devotion will live on through the family she built and nurtured across generations. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
