My condolences to his family, a father who will be missed. I stalked you (at every book signing when I lived on Long Island) always being the last in line. We finally made a contact when I told him I worked at Gurneys & my husband was the CFO. We invited him, Sandra & James to come out on Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately, James became ill and they had to cut their visit short. This was my chance to get to know Nelson better. I have every book Nelson wrote and signed by him. When I left Long Island, Patricia and I made arrangements to receive his book (signed). I regret never having the pleasure of sitting with him and just talking. From everything I have read here he was more than an author, a friend and kind person to all that knew him. I will miss receiving his latest book!

My Godfather ŵas a very special, creative soul.
    'What do you need?'
'What did he have when in Vietnam?'
In the end a watch and no footqear.
    Nelson was filled with humility.
God Bless Everyone who attended his Service and Funeral. Unfortunately I was unable to attend- thank you to all who did. God does everything for a reason.
In his memory I am asking everyone who reads this to help a deceased Veterans family. Or help a Veteran that doesn't have what they need. Many men and women are left behind with families to support that end up on the street or do not have what they need.
Let's keep everyone with watches and footwear. Ideally they should have underpants too but sometimes war is hell. You may return only wearing a watch to your commander.

Nelson, a book writer, decorated war veteran, husband and father. Always a father first as he spoke to me about his children. He also had the unique ability to make you feel special. May God bless him and take care of his family.

I’ll always remember Mr. DeMille’s kindness in making himself available when “Plum Island” came out while I worked as a reporter in Southold, where the book was set. I was more than just a bit tense at the thought of interviewing not only a NYT best selling author, but my favorite writer as well. In the end, though, it felt like just two guys talkin’. He was truly a one of a kind.

He was a great man. I was the maintenance man in the building where he had his office. 61 Hilton Avenue. He never failed to ask how I was doing. I have all his books most of them autographed by Mr. DeMille. He started most of the dedications to my wife Lois as we both worked at the building. This was from 1985 to 2002. I will always how he made even a maintenance man feel like a big man. Rest in Peace

On behalf of the family of Joseph Paul Russell Sr. we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Nelson DeMille. Our family, including Pamela, Michael, Eddie, Mary Ann, Peter and Joseph Jr. are so sorry to hear of the passing, having fond memories of Nelson playing in the backyard of his Elmont home. Nelson's father was our grandmother's brother, and we remember Uncle Flash well. We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I think back to that day in 1998 when you were giving a lecture in the hall right outside the Hofstra University library and I happened to just sit in to listen between classes. I didn’t realize that you were a famous author and was not shy to asked you all of these questions. Unlike most of my lecturers, you had my rapt attention. When it was over, you invited me to speak with you afterward, and recommended that I read your new book, Plum Island. When I began reading it within a few days, I became your reader and your disciple…. running to get the next book from Borders as quickly as I finished the last one. After having read four books, I was determined to meet you again. Through the Hofstra Alumni House, you were so gracious to accept the request of a journalism student’s request for an interview. How I will never forget walking into your office for the first time and how it took seconds, not minutes, for us to become friends. Over coffee, we talked about so much, and yet, the memory has never faded over the years. Everything from your visits to the set of The General’s Daughter, laughing about the characters that made up our Italian families, the possibilities of terror attacks that you foresaw through your research years before 9/11, and the use of number 1 pencils and coffee to fuel imagination. I still laugh when I remember your surprise at finding out that there was a hardcover book club edition of The General’s Daughter available without your knowledge and asked if you could borrow mine…and the unforgettable message you wrote in it thanking me for letting you borrow the book. I was very young, figuring out my journey, and you were happy to be my mentor. I arrived in your office a fan and left a friend….a friendship that would never wane at all in over more than a quarter of a century. Barely twenty and now more than halfway through my forties, the delight each time over the decades when we saw one another was always so evident on both of our faces. Your encouragement to write my own two books, was always valued. Quite frankly, I valued every second of your time, your concern, your advice, your friendship and your love. Your generosity and thoughtfulness was always moving to me…and the surprise when you would send a book, a card, or a letter always made my day better than I can express. I have all the letters, the photos, and the books that tell the story of my special history of one Hofstra alumn who impacted the life’s journey of another one. I was one of your countless friends, but you had that unmatched ability to make each of us, the famous to the unknown, feel how much our presence in your life mattered. I am blessed and grateful to God that He gave me the gift of you as a cherished friend…and grateful to you for standing by me as my special friend all of these years. I love you, I miss you, and I always will.

Nelson was a great man and a deeply patriotic American. A former U.S. Army officer and a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, he was also a fine friend. He encouraged me in my own modest career as an author, and contributed mightily to two of my books: a brilliant chapter entitled "Brothers Are We" in my 2018 book "VIETNAM: Remembrances of a War" and a warm and wonderful review of my 2022 volume "WESTHAMPTON: Golden Days and Memories for a Lifetime." His willingness to help and genuine human goodness were above and beyond the call of duty and the marks of a true friend. May he rest in peace.
